DEDICATED CONTAINMENT BUNDS

110% Tank Capacity Bunding To HSE Guideline

  • STRUCTURALLY INDEPENDENT OF TANK
  • 20 YEAR DESIGN LIFE
  • BS EN 12573
  • SINGLE TANK OR MULTI TANK CONTAINMENT

The purpose of a bund provided for a tank or tanks is to contain any unintended escape of the material from those tanks. Bunds provide secondary containment for the liquids stored in the tanks or other items therein. The NIPLAST® range of containment bunds accord with HSE guidance and are sized to hold 110% of the tanks’ capacity.

Product Specification

When supplied with a NIPLAST® storage tank within our SAFEBULK ® OR SAFEWALL ® formats we extend the same corrosion resistance to the bunding mechanisms as the storage tanks, constructing to BS EN 12573 in either polypropylene or high density polyethylene.

Construction formats can be either cylindrical vertical or rectangular vertical and can be sized to accommodate one or more tanks or indeed other storage units such as IBCs.

Inclined rain skirts can be provided to prevent the ingress of water or bunds can remain open topped if located indoors. A thermoplastic NIPLAST® bund is often a cost-effective alternative to a civil built bund comprising brick, mortar and often a subsequent chemical liner. Leak detection and breach alarm options are available to alert operators to any early ingress of liquid. Bunds can incorporate side entry manways to ease access

Dedicated Containment Bunds

Dedicated Containment Bunds are tanks designed to capture and contain hazardous substances in the event of a primary containment system failure. These bunds are typically constructed from materials that are compatible with the substances they may come into contact with, such as chemicals, oils, fuels, or other hazardous liquids. The primary purpose of Dedicated Containment Bunds is to prevent contamination of soil, groundwater, and surface water, while also ensuring the safety of workers and the surrounding community.

How Do Dedicated Bunds Work?

The primary function of Dedicated Containment Bunds is to capture and contain any hazardous substances that might leak or spill from the primary containment system. These bunds act as a secondary barrier, creating a contained area where any spilled material can be safely confined. The bunds are typically designed to hold a specific volume of liquid, ensuring that they have the capacity to capture the entire contents of the primary containment in the event of a failure.

Dedicated Containment Bunds are constructed from materials that are compatible with the hazardous substances they may encounter. This ensures that the bund itself does not react with or become compromised by the materials it is meant to contain. Common materials for bund construction include high-density polyethylene (HDPE), chosen for their resistance to corrosion and deterioration.

In the event of a spill or leak, Dedicated Containment Bunds prevent hazardous substances from reaching the surrounding environment. This is crucial for preventing soil, groundwater, or surface water contamination. By containing the spilled material within the bunded area, these systems help mitigate the environmental impact of the incident.

Dedicated Containment Bunds are often mandated by environmental regulations, or environment and safety standards in various industries. They ensure compliance with these regulations, which typically require that the bund has the capacity to contain the entire volume of the largest container within it, along with allowances for rainwater or firewater runoff. Compliance helps companies avoid fines, legal liabilities, and reputational damage.

Proper access points and drainage systems are integral to the functionality of Dedicated Containment Bunds. Access points allow for easy inspection and maintenance, while drainage systems help manage any liquids that accumulate within the bunded area. Drainage should direct collected liquids to designated storage or treatment areas, preventing further environmental impact.

Uses in Various Industries

Chemical Industry

The chemical industry widely deploys Dedicated Containment Bunds to contain potential leaks or spills of corrosive, toxic, or flammable chemicals. These bunds are strategically placed around storage tanks, chemical processing equipment, and transfer areas, reducing the risk of chemical releases into the environment. This safeguard helps maintain compliance with stringent environmental regulations and ensures the safety of workers.

Oil and Gas Sector

In the oil and gas industry, Dedicated Containment Bunds are indispensable for preventing oil spills and leaks from storage tanks, pipelines, and processing facilities. These bunds serve as a crucial line of defence against the contamination of water bodies, soil, and marine ecosystems. They are particularly vital for offshore drilling operations, where environmental consequences can be severe.

Agriculture

Agriculture relies on Dedicated Containment Bunds to protect against spills of pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers, and fuels. These bunds are placed around chemical storage tanks, pesticide mixing areas, and fuel storage facilities, ensuring that potential leaks or spills do not harm soil, groundwater, or nearby water bodies. This protection is essential for maintaining crop and livestock health.

Water Treatment Plants

Water treatment plants use Dedicated Containment Bunds to encircle chemical storage areas. These bunds are essential for containing hazardous chemicals used in the water treatment process, preventing accidental spills from reaching water sources. This protection is crucial for ensuring the quality of drinking water and preserving aquatic ecosystems.

Hazardous Waste Management

Facilities handling hazardous waste materials, such as waste storage sites and treatment plants, rely on Dedicated Containment Bunds. These bunds are essential for containing spills or leaks that may occur during waste handling or processing, minimising the risk of environmental contamination and ensuring safe waste disposal.

Benefits and Compliance

The use of Dedicated Containment Bunds offers several significant advantages:

Environmental Protection: Dedicated Containment Bunds play a pivotal role in preventing hazardous substances from entering the environment, thereby reducing the risk of soil and water contamination. This protection is critical for preserving ecosystems, biodiversity, and the health of natural habitats. They can also work in conjunction with a secondary containment system.

Health and Safety: By containing spills and leaks, Dedicated Containment Bunds protect workers, nearby communities, and first responders from potential exposure to hazardous materials. This proactive approach minimises health and safety risks associated with chemical incidents.

Regulatory Compliance: Many industries operate under stringent environmental regulations that mandate the use of secondary containment systems with safe storage. Dedicated Containment Bunds ensure compliance with these regulations, helping companies avoid fines, legal liabilities, and reputational damage.

Risk Mitigation: Dedicated Containment Bunds serve as essential risk mitigation measures. They help reduce the financial, operational, and reputational costs associated with environmental incidents and accidents, which can be significant and long-lasting.
